Region hosts first-ever bellydance competition Halton hosted its first-ever bellydance competition earlier this month at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre. The gala show, titled Egypt Raqs 2016, was put on by Middle Eastern dance studio BellyUp BellyDance. It marked the studio's 10th anniversary and was tied to a weekend-long dance training workshop held at BellyUp in Oakville. Clockwise, from above, are dance competitors: Yukie; Marii; Lily Altar; Claudya Khalida; and Helene Edenkassar. | Michael Ivanin photos continued from p.46 Carter noted her EP took about six months to write and record, which was a "great process" because she was thoroughly involved. Four of the five tracks on the album were co-written by the singer, her band members and other artists. "It was just a total labour of love. There were a lot of late nights in the studio," she said. "It was a very special process. I'm not sure I will ever be lucky enough to have that again, to (make a record) with four of your best friends." As for touring, the Oakville artist will continue to play shows in Canada for the rest of this year. Carter's next local performance will be Thursday, Nov. 10 at The Moonshine Café, where she used to play regularly several years ago. "That was so imperative to my band and I, (as we) got our stage legs and worked through kinks. It still really feels like home whenever I play there. It's a really awesome place," she said. Besides the one-song deal with UMC, Carter is writing new songs for a second album, either as an EP or a full-length CD, which she hopes to release in 2017. "Releasing albums as an artist is a cool thing, even for yourself... even if they don't really go anywhere, because you have a timeline of your musical evolution," said Carter. "Putting out new material is always really important to me." Carter's self-titled EP is available on iTunes, at her shows and on her website at vanessamariecarter.com.
