Call 905-308-0355 ASHWORTH, Dr Edward John Passed away peacefully at St. Peter's Hospital, Hamilton on September 16, 2016 in his 88th year. He was predeceased by his dear wife, June Kathleen Ashworth, his twin brother Paul Ashworth and eldest son Andrew John Ashworth. He was a loving father to his surviving sons Dominic, Stephen and Timothy. He will be deeply missed by his brother Peter and family, Trish, his grandchildren Greg, Maria, Christina, Leslie, Emma, Kristen, and Ethan, and his nephews John, Joseph, Gerrard and Richard. Born in Manchester, England, in 1928, Dr Ashworth moved with his wife and first son to Canada in 1958. Dr Ashworth joined the Department of Anaesthesia at Hamilton General Hospital in 1962, and during the course of his career provided care to over 65,000 patients. He was Head of Anaesthesiology at Hamilton General, and Chief of the Department of Anaesthesia at the Hamilton Civic Hospitals. During his tenure he participated in a pioneering effort to develop open heart surgery, leading to the first such operation in Hamilton in 1963. Dr Ashworth also played a role in developing the first pain clinic in Hamilton at the Henderson Hospital. Later in his career, he was a member of the Faculty of Anaesthesia at McMaster University, and held the post of Director of the Rotating Internship Program. Dr Ashworth was a keen equestrian, participating in horse shows and events. He also had a long standing passion for music and photography, which he passed on to his sons. Friends may call to pay their respects at the Marlatt Funeral Home, 195 King Street West, Dundas on Monday, September 26th from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. A private Family Service will be held at a later date. He will be sadly missed by his daughter Alison and son Robert (Sheila). He was the very proud Granda to Lauren (Ted), Kathleen (Grant), Stewart (Peggy), greatgrandchildren Rob (Jessica), Chelsea, Holly, Sabrina, Justin, Hailey and great-great-granddaughter Emma. Brother to Ann (deceased). He is survived by his sister Ella in Australia and many nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his many friends at the Rotary Garden homes. After emigrating to Canada from Aberdeen, Scotland, Bob started work at Stirling and Dynes which later became Kennedy Ford for 33 years. Cremation has taken place and a private family funeral was held at St. Jude's Cemetery. Special thanks to Dr. Gabriel and the nurses at OTMH for their care.
