www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, September 23, 2016 | 20 OMHS goes the distance for the animals in half-marathon by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff The Oakville and Milton Humane Society (OMHS) brags it will have the largest team in Sunday's (Sept. 25) Nutrience Oakville Half Marathon. Once again, OMHS -- which will have 32-35 runners participating -- is treating the annual half marathon as a fundraiser for the local shelter. "We are so excited about this.... For all of the events we have done, I can't imagine one with more heart," said Lisa Ashby, OMHS manager of fund development. "Working at OMHS, I know how miraculous this shelter is. I watch the staff, dedicated and compassionate, and I see how far they will go for an animal and I see how the world changes for that animal," she noted. "OMHS does not receive funding from the government or any other animal welfare organization to care for or find homes for the animals. For this, we rely on donations." Last year, OMHS Animal Protective Services was motivated by Oakville resident Andrew Shannon to register in the half marathon. An unusual and light-hearted campaign drew attention to the crisis of cat over-population and challenges of finding lost pets, whole raising more than $26,000 for OMHS. The campaign garnered national attention and donations from across Canada, and included posters for the missing `Cat-Man' and a hotline where people could report sightings and sponsor Shannon. Three years ago, Shannon first donned cat ears and a tail to run in the Oakville Half Marathon and raise awareness and funds for the OMHS. Known as Cat-Man, he raised more than $6,000. While he couldn't be at the Oakville half marathon this year, Shannon will be there in spirit, as he will be running while he is in Helsinki, Finland. Team OMHS has raised $2,895, so far, with the help of renovation consultant sponsor Zumin. To donate, visit omhs.ca/oakville-half-marathon. The Oakville half marathon is celebrating its 10th year in 2016 and sees runners head through a residential and downtown Oakville route that finishes at Coronation Park. Sunday's race starts at 7:45 a.m. and features the half marathon, a 10-kilometre, 10K Student Relay, 5K and 2K events. There will also be a Runner's Expo Saturday (Sept. 24), that's open to the public 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at Coronation Park, 1426 Lakeshore Rd. W. For more information, visit oakvillehalfmarathon.com.
