www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, September 23, 2016 | 22 Aglukark brings Inuit story to MacLachlan College by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff Juno Award-winning singer/songwriter Susan Aglukark will be walking Oakville's MacLachlan College students through Canadian Inuit history Monday (Sept. 26). Aglukark, who is also a motivational speaker, will be visiting the school to present Nomad, a multimedia speaking and singing presentation that takes people on the journey of the Inuit over the last 1,000 years and how they have survived and thrived through adversity and rapid change. She's been invited as part of MacLachlan College's move to create grade-appropriate curriculum and interactive projects that link Indigenous and non-Indigenous youths. The independent school, which teaches preKindergarten to Grade 12, is calling the project Mindful Nation: A Vision for Canada's Future. It's inspired by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report, which details what awareness are essential to creating compassion and understanding. The project its school community will be embarking on will "guide students through learning experiences using the themes of acknowledging the past, looking forward to the future and being in the present today." Indigenous education is not just for Indigenous students, but for all students to know about the long and complex history of the relationship between Indigenous and nonIndigenous peoples in Canada. The MacLachlan community plans to have Aglukark return to the school on May 27, 2017 for a community celebration of the year-long project, which will include Indigenous dancers and drummers, the unveiling of an Indigenous art installation, meeting with pen pals from a First Nations School so that students can share their experiences, and the presentation of the first annual Dr. Susan Aglukark Award for Inuk Culture and History. "We believe that by enabling our students to interact with their Indigenous counterparts, they will share experiences and learn to build bridges, so they can move forward with common goals and understanding, creating a better Canada now, and in the future," said Michael Piening, Head of School at MacLachlan College in a media release Susan Aglukark happened to Indigenous children who were physically- and sexually-abused in government boarding schools.
