Cancer Care Centre officially opens at new OTMH by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Thursday, September 29, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Halton Healthcare officially opened its Cancer Care Clinic at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) last Thursday (Sept. 22). The facility, which actually began treating patients Feb. 8, has so far helped hundreds of Halton residents facing a battle with cancer to remain in their community instead of being forced to seek treatment elsewhere. "You are likely not aware, but we really started on our quest to have a Cancer Care Clinic at OTMH in 2000. So, this has been a long time coming," said Halton Healthcare President and CEO Denise Hardenne, during a small ceremony in the hospital's John Oliver Auditorium. "It was almost like the `quest for fire,' this quest to provide cancer care to our local community out of this new facility. We celebrate the end of, what I call, a 16-year gestation period with the official opening of our Cancer Care Clinic, which we are very, very proud to do today." The new cancer clinic provides patient assessment, teaching, counseling, information resources, chemotherapy administration, blood transfusions, procedures and clinical trails for oncology patients. Other services include radiation treatment assessments, consultations and education. While the new hospital opened Dec. 13, 2015, the clinic's opening had to wait until Feb. 8, with Hardenne stating introducing new complex clinical programming would have been "foolhardy" on the same day Hal- ton Healthcare staff were coping with the moving of 273 patients from the previous hospital. The clinic is the result of a partnership between Haton Healthcare and the Mississauga Halton Central West Regional Cancer Program along with support from Cancer Care Ontario. Leslie Starr, regional vice-president of the Mississauga Halton Central West Regional Cancer Program, spoke about this partnership. "As a regional cancer program it is our responsibility to ensure the delivery of cancer care and cancer treatment to patients across our LHIN (Local Health Integration Network), but we can't do that alone and as all of you in this room know collaboration is key to our success," said Starr. "The Mississauga Halton LHIN is rapidly growing in population and with that, so is the demand for healthcare services. Within the design and planning of your new Oakville hospital, there has been an opportunity to work together to respond to this demand by expanding cancer care services to the Halton Region including chemotherapy." Medical Director of Cancer Services with Halton Healthcare, Dr. John McPhaden, talked about the clinic's expanding level of treatment. see New on p.7 Free Installation Sale on Safety Covers!
