www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, September 30, 2016 | 26 Dawson makes winning look easy, even if it's not By Herb Garbutt Oakville Beaver staff Teammate Dave Brock calls it the hardest trophy to win. Dan Dawson isn't helping that claim. For the second year in a row, and seventh time in his career, Dawson hoisted the Mann Cup above his head, after leading the Six Nations Chiefs to the Canadian senior lacrosse title. Dawson had two goals and five assists in a 14-6 victory over Maple Ridge as Six Nations closed out the series in five games. "The sport's been very good to me," the 34-year-old said. "I've been blessed to play a sport I love for a long time and I'm forever in debt to the game, but I got to be honest, it's not the way I envisioned it." Few players are picturing a national championship when their team starts the season with one win in 10 games. But that changed on Canada Day when the Brampton Excelsiors traded Dawson and his brother Paul to Six Nations. Though the Chiefs had won the Mann Cup in 2013 and 2014, they were by no means favourites, sitting third in the Major Series Lacrosse standings. The Chiefs knocked off second-place Brooklin in the MSL semifinals but their championship hopes hung by a thread after dropping the first three games of the final to Peterborough. To make matters worse, leading scorer Cody Jamieson tore his ACL in the Brooklin series. That should have ended his season, but he continued to play. He scored six times over the next four games and had 11 points as Six Nations rallied to win four straight and take the series in seven games. "He gave us such an emotional lift," Dawson said. "He's such a warrior. To be producing two goals a game, it was so emotional. We said, `Let's finish this series." At the Mann Cup, the addition of Dawson would become even more important with Jamieson hobbled. With the series tied 1-1, Dawson set up overtime goals by Austin Staats and Jamieson Four Oakville players selected in NLL draft Continued from p.25 the second round, 13th overall, the Rochester Knighthawks picked Tyler Albrecht in fourth round (34th overall) and the Toronto Rock chose Jackson Hulbert in the fifth round (42nd overall). Martin was an all-Canadian at the University of Guelph. He played two seasons each with the Buzz and the Chiefs and was a frequent call-up to the Oakville Rock due to his strong defensive play. Martin had a goal and 21 assists in 19 games with the Chiefs. Albrecht was a teammate of Cole's on both the Buzz and the Chiefs as well as Canada's silver-medal winning under-19 lacrosse championship team. After winning back-toback Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations titles with St. Michael's College, he played four years at Loyola University, where he scored 18 goals in 17 games in his senior season. Hulbert split last season between Toronto Beaches and the Burlington Chiefs, scoring 16 goals and adding 19 assists in 15 games. Hulbert had 78 goals and 177 points in 72 games over his Jr. A career. They won 9-7 the following night and then closed out the series with the 14-6 win, led by Dawson's seven-point night. He finished the series with 23 points to earn the Mike Kelly Award as the series' most valuable player. Overall, Dawson scored 21 goals and had 70 points in 18 games during Six Nations' playoff run. Dawson has now won seven Mann Cups with three different teams (Brampton '02, '08, '09, '11; Victoria '05, '15; and now Six Nations). It was the third Mann Cup for Paul, having won with Brampton in 2008 and 2009. Dan said having his brother as a teammate sharing a championship made this one special. Dawson is already getting ready for the NLL season with the Rochester Knighthawks. "There's no rest," Dawson said. "When you get over 35, you have to out-train the young guys. The game will surpass you if you take any time off." Winning championships isn't easy. Dawson just makes it look that way. ® Ultimate Drivers "Driver Training That Makes a Difference" sIGn UP onLIne Program www.ultimatedrivers.ca For Reinstating Driver's License Prepares you for G2 or G License defensive driving Certificate Minimizes Road Test Time and Qualifies for Maximum Insurance Discount driver retraining Program Complete refresher Program Helps Reviewing Your Driving Habits for Test drIVer edUCatIon ProGram. 100 on oUr beGInner FaLL sPeCIaL $ saVe You Helped Pull for Possibility Preparation and evaluation Warm Up Practice Before the Test advance defensive driving Program refresher Program Minimizes Road Test Time, Qualifies for Maximum Insurance Discount and Teaches You Emergency Skills Winter time driving Helps overcome your Winter Time Driving Jitters llent Exce ices Serv ce in S 1993 oCtober 7, 8, 9, 10 deCember 26, 27, 28, 29 4 day Condensed 2 WeeKends oCtober 1 & 2 oCtober 8 & 9 2380 Wyecroft Road Unit #3 Oakville Vachon Insurance Group 200-5468 Dundas St. W, Toronto, ON 1-800-766-8662 vachoninsce.com We Are Licensed by MTO Gift Certificates Available As independent insurance brokers, we have freedom of choice.
