Cyclist pinned in drive-thru by Catherine O'Hara Metroland Media West 3 | Friday, September 16, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com A 59-year-old Oakville cyclist was transported to Hamilton General Hospital after being pinned by a vehicle while he was in the process of making a payment at a McDonald's drive-thru window in Oakville. The incident occurred just before 7 p.m. Wednesday (Sept. 14), when a vehicle mounted the curb and struck the cyclist at the McDonald's at Third Line and Upper Middle Road. The cyclist suffered "serious limb injury," said police in a release. The injuries were characterized by police as "life altering." "The injuries, to the best of our knowledge, are serious but not life-threatening," said Halton Regional Police Acting Sergeant Mike Burton from the scene, at 1500 Upper Middle Rd. However, "assessments are still being made," he added. According to police, the cyclist was attempting to complete a purchase at the drive-thru window when a grey BMW lost control and pinned the cyclist against the exterior wall of the restaurant building. The BMW's driver, a 75-year-old Oakville resident, was unharmed. The driver was initially arrested on scene, but later released unconditionally. Charges have yet to be laid. The parking lot at the scene was closed for four hours as police investigated. Members of the police's Collision Reconstruction Unit and Forensic Identification Unit are investigating. Their investigation, said Burton, will include a review of camera footage from the restaurant and surrounding businesses. Witnesses are asked to call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 905-825-4747, ext. 5065 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), www.haltoncrimestoppers.com or text Tip20 with a message to 274637 (crimes).
