Every year, the recipients of Oakville's Community Spirit Awards take home a unique, individually created piece of artwork to sym bolize their contribution to the community. This year, the eight recipients will take home one-of-a-kind wood sculpture created by local artist Richard Posa who brings new life to old logs he finds in Oakville, explained Ronnie Brown of the Community Spirit Awards steer ing committee and marketing and develop ment manager of the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts where Monday's press confer ence to announce the awards was held. The wood sculptor was commissioned to create the awards in keeping with wood being the theme of the fifth annual presentation. The awards recognize individuals/organiza tions, businesses and groups who have made valuable contributions to the community through volunteerism. " Volunteerism is a vital part of what makes Oakville a unique community," said Oakville Mayor Ann Mulvale. "The spirit and. passion for helping others is alive and well in Oakville. The reason we creat ed the Oakville Community Spirit Awards was to recognize volunteers who contribute their time and advance our quality of life." Mulvale invited groups and individuals to get involved and nominate community cham pions - people or groups who have given of their time and talents to better an organiza tion, someone else's life or the community as a whole. "Without volunteers, many service simply couldn't happen," said Nina deVaal, Director, Town of Oakville Recreation and Culture Department, adding her department benefited from 75,000 volunteer hours last year, "every thing from kids' hockey to museum tours and cultural events." She said the award sponsors are also vol unteers, who give financial support to the cre ation of the awards by artists. "With the support of dedicated sponsors, we can recognize a number of very deserving Oakville residents and organizations. The Awards program is an event the Town is very proud to bring to this community."
