The Oakville Beaver, W ednesday M arch 1, 2006 - 15 Nissan clear paint repairs surface scratches By Jim Robinson and Rob Bientema Nissan Motor Co., Ltd, has devel oped the world's first clear paint that repairs scratches on painted car sur faces, including scratches from carwashing machines, off-road driving and fingernails. "Scratch Guard Coat" contains a newly developed, highly elastic resin that helps prevent scratches from affecting the inner layers of a car's painted surface. With "Scratch Guard Coat" a car's scratched surface will return to its original state anywhere from one day to a week, depending on temperature and the depth of the scratch. The water-repellent paint also has a higher resistance to scratches com pared with conventional clear paints. A vehicle painted with "Scratch Guard Coat" will have only one-fifth BMW blends style and performance C ontinued from page 13 Nissan has developed a clear paint that can repair scratches on car surfaces. the abrasions caused by a car-washing machine compared with a car covered with conventional clear paint. Scratches from car-washing machines account for the majority of scratches to painted car surfaces. "Scratch Guard Coat" will be applied for the first time on an SUV model that is scheduled for a partial makeover in the near future.^ The paint will be applied to the car's chassis, bumpers and door mirrors, among other parts. The 6-speed manual gearbox is designed to handle up to 450 lb-ft of torque (there will, after all, be an ultimate performance `M' version out later this spring), and will reach the car's elec tronically limited top speed of 250 km/h in both fifth and sixth gears. Shift throws between gear ratios are short and quick, and the interplay between the shifter and clutch is sublime. Even at highway speeds in sixth gear, passing times are brief -- drop down to fourth or even third gear and they're virtually instant. Stopping power is also found in abundance, with massive, vented, lightweight aluminum discs at all four wheels equipped with extra large aluminum swing calipers, standard ABS and Dynamic Brake Control, which builds up optimum brake power in a panic braking situation should the driver fail to exert full pressure on the brake pedal. Run-flat tires are also standard. Spending many consecutive hours behind the wheel or in the front passenger seat of this 4seater leaves driver and occupant refreshed, alert and comfortable. The same cannot be said of the back seats. While equally well finished in high quality leather with meticulous stitching, they are best suited to children or smaller adults; two average- size adults will be reasonably comfortable on short hauls only. At 450 litres, the trunk is large for this class of vehicle, capable of carrying a large suitcase and two golf bags, with clubs. A ski bag in the middle of the rear seat back rest holds two pairs of skis. Practicality is further enhanced by a 4.8-litre glovebox, storage pockets in the doors, nets on the seatbacks and storage pockets and compartments throughout the inte rior. The base MSRP for the 645Ci was $99,000. Equipped with two option packages -- the Executive at $6,400 and the Individual Collection at $9,900 -- our tester tipped the scales at $115,300. The Executive package adds Active Steering, sport seats, audible park distance con trol, stunning 19-inch ellipsoid alloy wheels (18inchers are standard), a 6-disc CD changer in the glovebox and an even more premium sound sys tem. The Individual Collection is more cosmetic in nature and includes a bi-colour leather steering wheel, more glossy paint finish, upgraded uphol stery, piano black interior trim and illuminated door entry sills. In every respect the BMW 6 Series speaks to elegance, beauty and stylish per formance. For those with the means to own or lease one, the 645Ci exemplifies the joy that can be found in driving.
