Toner-Burke's daughter Cathy Hoppener, who co-chairs this year's Super Cities Walk with Melanie Diong, the MS Society's Ontario Division walk coordinator, thanked the event's top fundraisers last year. `Tear after year, your support and commitment continues to make us all feel proud to be part of this communi ty," she said. "This rally is our opportu nity to say thank you for the incredible efforts you make every year in helping us to achieve our mandate - to be a leader in finding a cure and enabling those living with MS to enhance their quality of life." MS attacks the myelin, the insulat ing cover of the central nervous sys tem, and can cause loss of balance, impaired speech, extreme fatigue, dou ble vision and paralysis. The country's top individual fundraiser, Bob Decker of Oakville, raised $55,000, said Hoppener, and the top team was Chicken Little whose five members raised $13,290. The largest team, with 61 members, was Bryant's Brigade, headed by Jessica Bryant who was diagnosed with MS six years ago. "But, you wouldn't know it," said-. her fiance of four years, Craig Earle, an MS Society volunteer and member of Bryant's Brigade. "Jessica Bryant will never ever tell you that she suffers from MS - Jessica Bryant lives with MS. In fact, she fights MS. And, you know, if MS was an actu al person, she would be going toe to toe with him throwing haymakers like you wouldn't believe...I'm serious, she's small but she's a fighter." Earle added Bryant counsels others who have been diagnosed with MS and takes her role as Team MS Ambassador for Oakville's Super Cities Walk "very seriously" and is "passionate" about participating every year. "MS has given her a profound view of life," he said. "It allows her not to take anything for granted and to cher ish each day as it comes." Earle said working with other MS volunteers "fills me with hope. "There is a very special feeling of being surrounded by a group of people who all have stories similar to mine. Some of us have spouses with MSTor siblings, or parents, or children, or friends.. .it doesn't matter - the fact is that they just simply want to "help in any way they can." # For him, participating in the walk each year is "truly heart warming...to see a parking lot full of thousands of people who have all taken the time to come out and support each a great cause...well I couldn't be prouder to be part of that group, a group whose selfless work and determination con tinues to get us closer to a cure."
