The first is fear. The second is greed. As the m arket heads down, investors shift from greed to denial to anxiety to outand-out fear. As the m arkets pick up, investors swing from fear to optimism to excitement to outand-out greed. Drew: And so the cycle continues D uncan: Now, this cycle has been going on for a long time. But th a t doesn't mean investors ju st have to accept it. W hile it's im portant to acknowledge th a t wealth m anagem ent can be an emotional experience, th a t doesn't mean we should simply stand by while our emotions get in the way of o u r financial plans. Drew: Because em otions can distort sound financial judgem ent; F ear can prevent you from m aking th e necessary investm ents in the stock m arket to keep your .savings ahead of inflation, for example. On the other hand, greed can lead you to take on -'more risk th a n is necessary, or to ignore certain "w arning signs" th a t can occur when the m arket starts trending down. D uncan: T h at's a very good point. In the middle of a m arket mania, for instance, when greed clouds th e decision-m aking process, investors ignore more conservative, investm ents in favour of high-risk, speculative equities. In th e middle of a m arket meltdown, they do ju st the opposite, passing by valuepriced equity opportunities in a quest to seek absolute · security. Rarely is either type of decision in the investor's best interests. Drew: And th a t's why everyone needs an in vestm ent policy statem ent, or IPS. Duncan: T hat's right. In a lot of ways, you can think of the IPS functions as a personal "mission sta te m e n t" th a t outlines your investm ent approach, and establishes th e tangible, m easurable criteria by which you make investm ent decisions. Drew: In th a t way, the IPS is an anchor in a storm. As a w ritten expression of your individual goals and your tolerance for risk, your IPS tells you w hat you should be buying and w hat you should be selling, and under w hat circumstances. Duncan: And th a t's valuable. When the m arket gets hot and excitement sta rts to build, your IPS serves as a screening tool, helping you decide which investm ents belong in the portfolio, and which don't. At tfie other end of the m arket cycle, an IPS can be an immense help when volatility strikes, giving, you a firm signal to sell when the time comes, on your own term s--not ju s t because everyone else is selling. Drew: At the same time, though, we should point out th a t the idea behind an IPS isn 't to set inflexible investm ent "rules" th a t you have jbo follow in all circum stances. R ather, it's to estab lish a sta rtin g point for considering investm ent decisions. There may well be a situation th a t hasn't been anticipated by the IPS. Or perhaps there's an investm ent opportunity th a t the IPS doesn't cover. It's tough to anticipate every possible situation when you're w riting an IPS. B ut a t th e very least, a · clearly articulated IPS can encourage you to think about why you're making th a t decision. Ultimately, th a t makes it easier to make the right decision. Duncan: No doubt about it-- financial p lanning can be an emotional experience. But th a t doesn't m ean it has to be. Investm ent decisions should be based on professional research, reasoned analysis, and a thorough knowledge of your own financial goals. Talk to your financial professional about w riting an IPS. It will be the first step in making sure your emotions don't get the better of your financial plan.
