Halton Region making the switch to LED streetlights Reports says regional municipality may realize 45 to 60 per cent savings in energy costs per cent, the report revealed. The region-wide implementation of the LED street light conservation program will see about 5,000 high-pressure sodium luminaries on regional roads replaced with LED street lights that last 15-20 years or 65,000-85,000 hours and is expected to cost about $2.6 million between 2016-20. Payback anticipated in five to six years The Region anticipates the investment will be paid back within five to six years through energy cost savings and maintenance cost savings. Acton company SouthWestern Energy Inc. has been given the green light to convert about 500 existing lights on regional roads in the Town of Halton Hills for 2016 at a cost of $263,366, plus applicable taxes. The local power distribution company was already contracted out by the Town of Halton Hills as part of its own LED street light conversion plans. In an energy review of regional roads in Halton Hills, SouthWestern Energy Inc. determined that making the switch to LED fixtures would reduce energy costs by $27,498 a year. "This amounts to an energy savings of 60 per cent ($41,757 per year using existing hydro rates) with an estimated return on investment in Halton Region will be lighting up its regional roads in a more environmental way. A plan to convert all of its existing street lights on regional roads to light emitting diode (LED) street lights over the next few years has been approved in principle by Regional council. "Based on lower capital cost, longer life expectancy, energy savings and Provincial rebate incentive programs, it is now financially feasible to convert Halton Region's existing high pressure sodium street lights to LED technology," Jim Harnum said in his report presented to council in mid-September. Other municipalities are reaping savings Other municipalities that have implemented streetlight conversion programs already have realized or are anticipating energy savings of 45-60 approximately four years and nine months," the Regional report states. Working with local municipalities Regional staff will also be working with all the local municipalities to implement its conversion program as the Town of Oakville, the Town of Milton, the Town of Halton Hills, and the City of Burlington are at various stages in their LED street light implementation plan for local roadways. 33 | Thursday, October 6, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Leaky Basement?
