www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, October 6, 2016 | 44 John Bkila Sub-Editor jbkila@oakvillebeaver.com St. Jude's Celebration of the Arts opens with a bang The drums will certainly be beating to start off the 26th season of St. Jude's Celebration of the Arts (COTA) tomorrow (Friday). Renowned percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie will be in concert with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra (MCO) and Anne Manson as musical director. "Dame Evelyn Glennie is a master of a vast variety of percussive instruments," stated a media release. "This is a wonderful opportunity to hear world-renowned artists in a local setting." The Grammywinning musician and composer Glennie lost nearly all of her hearing by age 12. "Rather than isolating her, it has given her a unique connection to her music," stated the release. Fresh off winning the Polar Music Prize and recording an album with Dire Straits guitarist Mark Knop er, the Scottish polyglot is touring eastern Canada with the MCO in the fall. At Friday's concert, Glennie will perform the marimba, vibraphone and cloud gongs, arrangements of Vivaldi, Corelli and Canadian composer Christos Hatzis, as well as a handful of short contemporary works. Glennie has collaborated with musicians ranging from classical orchestras to Björk. Her career has taken her to hundreds of concert stages around the world, and she's recorded a dozen albums, winning a Grammy for her recording of Bartók's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, and another for her 2002 collaboration with Bela Fleck. Glennie has also collaborated with musicians Julian Lloyd Weber and Sir James Galway, the Music Education Consortium. In addition, she's the subject of the documentary Touch the Sound, which explores unconventional approaches to percussion. Established in 1972, the MCO presents nine concerts annually in Winnipeg, most of which feature guest soloists. The orchestra's repertoire ranges from the common mega-hits to new premieres. In 1995, the MCO became the rst North American orchestra to release a record with Sweden's prestigious Artscene "Connected to your Community" Anne Mason BIS label. Since then, it has recorded seven albums, two of which have earned Juno nominations (So Much To Tell with Measha Brueggergosman, and Troubadour & the Nightingale with Isabel Bayrakdarian). The show is set for 8 p.m. at St. Jude's Anglican Church, 160 William St. General admission tickets cost $40 and are available at www.OakvilleConcerts.com or by calling 905-844-3972. · · · The COTA 2016-17 season continues in the New Year with Four Thousand Winter featuring the Theatre of Early Music choir and artistic director and conductor Daniel Taylor. see A showcase on p.45 Grammy-winning percussionist and composer Dame Evelyn Glennie (above) is opening St. Jude's Celebration of the Arts tomorrow (Friday) alongside the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and musical director Anne Mason (at top right).
