|4 | OAKVILLE BEAVER |Thursday, October 6, 2016 Rehabilitated bridge to re-open by December 2017 continued from p.l Construction Dan Cozzi noted recent geotechnical testing revealed the existing steel piles under the bridge abutments are experiencing corrosion and it will be necessary to revise the project scope to replace the east and west bridge abutments. A retrofit of micro-piles to support the new abutments is also necessary Detailed inspections had already revealed the bridge' s steel box girders in need of replacement. The project will also see the reconstruction and streetscape of the road approaches. The bridge' s rehabilitation had initially been scheduled to take place in 2019 as part of the Lakeshore Road Reconstruction and Streetscape Project, but Town staff recommended that re construction of the bridge begin in January 2017 due to its condition. During the bridge rehab, Cozzi said, Lake shore Road would be closed to through traffic between Navy and Forsythe streets. The project was expected to be complete in late September 2017, however, the additional work means the bridge will not reopen until December 2017. It is also possible some work on the bridge could stretch into early 2018. a We truly believe, if everything goes right, that we will be done in advance of Christmas. There is always something that could go wrong, but our intent is to at least have the bridge open. 99 Dan Cozzi Director of Engineering and Construction, Town of Oakville re fle c tio n s O d e n ta l IN Dr. M arisa D'Angelo Dr. Shivani S a g g a r We offer full Family Dental Services in our new modern office in a calm and relaxing environment. They pointed out construction efficiency is essential given the Lakeshore Road bridges im portance in allowing residents to get to Oakville' s downtown area. "This is going to have a major impact for the downtown and not just the residents, but our downtown on both sides of the river will be majorly impacted by this one-year closure," said Ward 2 Town Councillor Ray Chisholm. "My strong suggestion is communication from the Town and council be very clear in giv ing timing projections, keeping them apprised on a week-by-week basis because it is going to be very, very difficult." Chisholm asked if construction work woufd be done on the Rebecca Street bridge by January 2017 so it could accommodate the Lakeshore Road bridge traffic. Cozzi said there is no active work taking place on top of the Rebecca Street bridge and as such it will be available for the detour. He also pointed out every effort would be made to get the Lakeshore Road bridge recon struction done before Christmas 2017. "We truly believe, if everything goes right, that we will be done in advance of Christmas," said Cozzi. "I don't know what 1 don't know. There is al ways something that could go wrong, but our intent is to at least have the bridge open. If there are some minor works that carry over, maybe the streedights don't get installed on the bridge or some other features don't get added until the early spring." After the bridge rehabilitation work is com plete, it is expected to last for around 75 years. Navy Street will be converted to two-way op eration to support the traffic detour during the bridge closure. Cozzi said Town staff would be looking at ways to accelerate the project where possible. This may include construction work also tak ing place on Saturdays or construction crews working extended hours during the week. "I' m willing even to go Sundays if this council is willing to do that," he said. "We'll have to see how the contractor bids for this and what the schedule is and then make those adjustments as we go forward." www.insideHALTON.com low er food p r i c e s ' o ® \* ia ( * Fri Oct 7th , Sat Oct 8th , & Sun Oct 9th 3 DAY W OW !
