Local teen crowned Miss Petite Southern Ontario, heads to Miss Canada Globe pageant Oakville's Madaleine Swierczynski may not have placed in the recent Miss Canada Globe pageant, but says the experience is still something she recommends to other teens. The 18-year-old Swierczynski is the reigning Miss Petite Southern Ontario and went on to compete in the national pageant in the summer, which was held over a week and a half at the Don Valley Hotel in downtown Toronto. "Unfortunately, I didn't place in the Top 10 for my category (petite), but I did come third in the talent competition for my contemporary dance," she told the Oakville Beaver. "The greatest part of the experience for me was getting to meet so many amazing girls from all across Canada. I made so many new friends and I continue to keep in touch with them." As part of competing in the Miss Canada Globe pageant, contestants must choose a platform charity. Swierczynski chose the Oakville and Milton Humane Society and will be appearing at many of their fundraising events to help promote the local animal shelter. Oakville's Robert Fernandes wins Fred Sherratt Award Oakville's Robert Fernandes was one of the recipients of the 2016 Fred Sherratt Award. Canada's leading music education charity MusiCounts recently hosted an event in Toronto to celebrate the talent and leadership of 12 outstanding music program graduates. The annual award was first launched in 2008 in partnership with Bell Media and named in honour of broadcasting pioneer Fred Sherratt.
