HARVEY, Marie Jean (formerly Simpson) January 10, 1919 - September 25, 2016 It is with deep sadness that we announce that Jean passed away peacefully at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital on Sunday, September 25, 2016 at the age of 97. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Henry (Harry) Guy Harvey and her brother, Ian Tindal. Jean was a devoted and loving mother and is survived by her daughter, Deborah-Lee Simpson, her son, Douglas Simpson and her daughter-in-law, Susan Brown. Born in London, England, educated in Scotland, twice married before the war, she served as an RAF Sergeant on radar stations in southern England during World War II. During this time she met and married her third husband, Howard Spear Simpson, a lawyer from Montreal, serving as a RCAF Flight Lieutenant. In 1946 she returned with him to Montreal where they raised their two children. Following Howard's death in 1959, Jean began a successful 30 year career in real estate, first in Montreal and later in Oakville, Ontario in partnership with her daughter, Deborah-Lee. In 1989, at the age of 70, she married Dr. Harry Harvey of Surrey, England. Harry moved to Canada and he and Jean settled in Victoria, B.C., enjoying a long and adventurous retirement with frequent cruises about the world. After Harry passed away in 2005, Jean moved back to Oakville to be close to her family. Jean had a long and interesting life and those who knew her will remember her smile, her sense of humour, her indomitable spirit and her devotion to her family and friends. While we are saddened by our loss, we are joyful for all the years we were blessed by her love and wisdom. We wish to sincerely thank the outstanding and caring staff of the Complex Care Unit at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital who individually and as a team made her last two years as comfortable and fulfilling as possible. Jean felt happy and loved and was appreciative of their many acts of care and thoughtfulness. We also wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to Shirley Hind, an exceptional caregiver who added her love and attention to Jean's final years. Words cannot express the peace of mind that our family had knowing how well they looked after her. In accordance with Jean's wishes, cremation has taken place. Joan was married for over 50 years to the love of her life, the late Bruce Johnson. Although Joans' family and friends are saddened by the suddenness of her death, it is comforting to know that she is finally at peace. Joan was an amazing woman who never gave up her fight to regain her health, in part so that she would dance at her granddaughters' weddings. Joan lived a full life as a loving wife, caring mother, sister, loyal friend, devoted Nana and registered nurse. Joan will be remembered by all who knew her ever present smile, incredible sense of curiosity and her love of fun. A devoted and loving mother to Ian (Arree), Paul (Sam), Martha, Ned (Rachelle) and Leanne (Ron); proudest Nana to Heather, Christianne, Erin, Stephanie and Juliana; she will be greatly missed by her brothers Richard Farley (Marg) and David Farley; while predeceased by her brother Stewart Farley (Jean); her nieces and nephews; her chosen family of incredible friends; her nursing colleagues and patients she worked with over the years. Joan missed her four-legged buddy and loyal companion Annie. A longtime resident of Oakville, she volunteered her time weekly to the Oakville Hospital. Joan was an avid bridge player, reader, golfer, Annie walker, mahjong player, traveler, antiquer and sports enthusiast. In her youth, the Oakville Golf Club kindled her infinite love for the game; the Oakville Curling Club was where her love of curling began. Bruce and Joan were avid curlers during their early married years and always enthusiasts of the sport. One of a few longest-standing members, the Oakville Club is where she played racquet sports, bridge and watched her children enjoy all the club had to offer. Joan had a beautiful bright smile she would unleash at the least provocation and a sparkle in her eyes that will always be remembered with much love and never forgotten. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to Ian Anderson House: www.ianandersonhouse.com. A celebration of Joan's life has been held.
