Grant sees Acclaim Health expand seniors' exercise program by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 23 | Thursday, October 20, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Oakville-based non-profit group Acclaim Health says a recent $177,400 Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) grant is allowing it to help more local seniors remain in their own home. The community health organization discussed the grant at a media event at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre (QEPCCC) last Thursday (Oct. 13). Acclaim received the first of the three-year grant in late 2015 and is using it to expand its seniors home exercise program. 12-week Home Support Exercise Program The 12-week Home Support Exercise Program (HSEP), developed by the Canadian Centre for Aging and Activity at Western University, has been offered for a number of years in Burlington. It brings trained volunteers into the homes of seniors to deliver 10 simple exercises Acclaim Health representatives say have been proven to improve strength, balance and flexibility. The grant now gives Acclaim Health the means to offer this program throughout Halton. "We are thrilled to be able to expand this Home Support Exercise Program," said This program is designed for people who have difficulty getting out to a community exercise program and who otherwise would not be able to benefit from regular exercise. Staying stronger means being able to live at home long and that is what most of us want. Patricia Blakeley Acclaim Health Patricia Blakeley, director of community support services at Acclaim Health.
