Speaking out to end violence continued from p.22 "When I speak to youths in different places in Canada, they're not aware that it's actually in the criminal code, so they think it's just in Nova Scotia. When I explain to them that it's against the law, they're kind of surprised," said Parsons. To honour Rehtaeh's memory, Parsons painted Nova Scotian beach stones and placed them around her community for others to find. The memory stone paintings portray spirited natural scenes and include Rehtaeh's birth and death dates, as well as an antiviolence message to raise awareness of the consequences of sexual violence. Little, who is researching Parsons' memory stone art for her PhD dissertation, received one of the stones and brought it to Oakville. The pair placed it on display at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre (QEPCCC) last Friday (Oct. 14). The night before the one-year anniversary of Rehtaeh's death, Parsons was contemplating how she could honour her the next day, so she came up with the idea to paint the stones. "The thought just came to me to go place them in all the communities that she loves. I spent the day going everywhere she loved and placing a stone in her memory," said Parsons. "I didn't have to put a lot of thought into it. I felt like I was honouring her and bringing her energy into the stone when I was painting it." Damoff's prepared remarks touched on her committee's work and the Canadian government's increased role in fighting violence against women and girls. She said there is a need to engage and educate men and boys, as it's crucial to "bringing about a larger cultural shift" that emphasizes consent and condemns rape culture, hypersexualization and objectification of women in the media. Zabudsky praised Sheridan's commitment to anti-violence in his presentation, citing the recent Sisters In Spirit gathering, cohosted by the Sheridan Centre for Indigenous Learning & Support, and Take Back the Night community march, among other events. "By attending tonight's event, you're taking an opportunity to step up to say, `Enough already' and to take action against sexual- and gender-based violence," said Zabudsky. "The issue of sexual assault and genderbased violence concerns us deeply. As a husband and father of three girls, these are issues I also care about personally." The question-and-answer period included a discussion with Parsons, Damoff, Brent Duguid, Halton Women's Place public educator, Dr. Sara Cumming, Sheridan sociology professor and gender studies expert, Maria Lucido-Bezely, Sheridan dean of students, and Cindy Noble, Sheridan nursing professor and sexual assault and violence nurse.
