In this scam, the suspect calls a small business pretending to be from a neighbouring store and asks the victim to sign and pay for an urgent package the individual is expecting. The suspect provides some excuse as to why they cannot be around to collect it themselves. The fraudster claims they will pay the victim back as soon as they can get back. If the victim agrees, someone arrives a short time later with a package for delivery. This individual collects the cash on delivery fees from the victim and leaves the store. It is not until some time later after the neighbouring business doesn't show up, the victim discovers the package is just a box filled with used magazines and they are out the cash. Det. Mark Underwood of the Halton police Fraud Unit said, so far, three people have been defrauded by this scam including two in Oakville and one in Burlington. The fees paid have been between $240-$260. The suspect was captured on surveillance camera and police hope someone can identify him.
