From Oct. 28-Dec. 6, Sheridan College will use the 193 Church St. facility to house its Advanced TV and Film Production program. Town staff said the program would utilize the main floor of the building for the production and filming of student film projects. Staff emphasized Sheridan faculty and instructors would supervise use of the facility at all times of occupancy. Sheridan College used the same building for similar purposes in the fall of 2015 with both the Town and college deeming it a successful partnership. The new agreement between the two parties, which was approved by Town council Aug. 22, will see the college pay $159 to the Town per day for the use of the former Canada Post Office. In total, Sheridan is expected to pay $6,380. Under the agreement, Sheridan can only film inside the post office, not outside. Sheridan staff and students are required to park vehicles in the municipal parking lot across the street from the building or in other paid lots within the downtown at regular daily rates. The agreement also requires Sheridan to return the facility to the condition it was in prior to use when the lease agreement is up. The college is not permitted to make building modifications without the written approval of the Town. The former post office was purchased for $11 million by the Town in April 2012. It is a key part the proposed Oakville Downtown Cultural Hub with option three of those development plans calling for the library and Oakville Galleries to be moved to the former post office building to make way for the redevelopment of the Oakville Performing Arts Centre. The Town's Recreation and Culture department has been working with various departments at Sheridan College to develop partnerships over the last several years.
