Starting at the town's western border on Burloak Drive and Lakeshore Road, the Grades 4-6 students embarked on a 15-kilometre walk to raise funds for Jumpstart. The Canadian Tire charity provides youths from families in nancial need a chance to participate in sports activities. Grades 4/5 teacher Matt Grif n said his students were excited about having a community impact after watching a documentary last month on Fox's Marathon of Hope, which began in Newfoundland on April 12, 1980. In spite of battling osteogenic sarcoma cancer, Fox, who had his right leg amputated 15 centimetres above his knee in March 1977, forged ahead in raising money to ght the disease. He of cially began his journey April 12, 1980 in St. John's, N.L. and ran an average of 42 kilometres a day through six provinces. Although he did not attain his goal of making it to British Columbia -- the cancer that had spread to his lungs stopped him Sept. 1, 1980 -- he created a legacy that continues today as communities around the world dedicate a day each fall to run or walk in honour of him and others affected by cancer. see Students on p.21 DR.
