Working with partners to reverse trends continued from p.6 I would like to outline the ways in which your federal government is responding to this issue. In the summer, the federal government took two swift actions to combat fentanyl overdoses. First, as an emergency public health measure, Federal Health Minister Jane Philpott allowed naloxone, an overdose antidote, to be available without a prescription to make it more accessible to those who need it. Then, the government restricted access to six chemicals that are used to produce illegal fentanyl, making it harder for criminals to access these ingredients. These regulatory measures were part of the federal government's commitment to address the opioid crisis and save lives. Recently, Minister Philpott introduced a fivepoint action plan to address opioid abuse. This plan will focus on better informing Canadians about the risks of opioids, supporting better prescribing practices by doctors, reducing easy access to unnecessary opioids, supporting better treatment options, and improving data collection about opioid abuse to improve future policy decisions. In November, Minister Philpott will host a summit on opioids with a small group of regulators to develop priorities and timelines for addressing the crisis. There is much work to be done to reverse the trends in opioid abuse and overdoses. The federal government will continue to work collaboratively with its health-care partners in communities across the country to address this serious issue. 7 | Friday, October 21, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com 5 DAYS ONLY BRANDED FOOTWEAR BLOWOUT Men's/Women's - Comfort, Seasonal, Safety WAREHOUSE DIRECT Oct 26th-30th 11am-6pm Take Our Kids to Work Day is on Nov. 2 Halton's Centre for Skills Development and Training is offering a free, one-day program for Grade 9 students Nov. 2 in recognition of Take Our Kids to Work Day.
