At first glance, you could be excused for thinking it seems not unlike the old Impala that was just put out to pasture. But there's a lot more to the new Chevy offspring that becomes evident once you put it under the microscope. Before we start dissecting it in detail, you should know that a lot of the lab work was done right here in Canada. General Motors says 65 per cent of the car's development work was done here. A major part of the chassis, powertrain, body structures and the total electrical system were done out of GM Canada's Regional Engineering Centre, located right next to the Oshawa, Ontario, assembly complex. OAKVILLE ON L6K3S4 independent quality ratings in North and South America three times in the last four years, is where the Impala, its new Monte Carlo twin, the Buick Allure (LaCrosse in the U.S.) and Pontiac Grand Prix are built. And, in yet another Canadian con nection, th e '06 Impala offers V8 power once again (in SS trim), this time in the form of an all-new, 5.3-litre smallblock motor (with Displacement on Demand technology) sourced from a GM engine plant in St. Catharines, Ontario. Now that its considerable Canadian DNA has been established, it's time to take a look at this animal's other evo lutionary aspects. It might surprise you to find that Chevrolet engineered more than 1,000 changes into the new Impala. They include all-new bodywork, anew, more comfortable and refined interior, and a trio of new engines that include vari able valve timing to optimize perform ance and economy. An example of the former is the use of an aluminum engine cradle, various suspension pieces and a "Quiet Steel" firewall to help isolate engine and tire noise from the passenger cabin. The latter can be found in a new 211 horse power, 3.5-litre V6 powering the $24,685 base Impala LS and step-up $26,200 LT models, a 242 horse, 3.9litre V6 for the $29,840 LTZ (built on the same architecture as the 3.5 V6 but with a variable-length intake manifold added for more power and usable torque) and the 5.3-litre V8, as previ ously mentioned, putting 303 hp on tap in the top-line $32,855 Impala SS. The main objective in all of the above was to make this mid-size sedan quieter inside and more inspiring to drive. Wheel time with the SS was our obvious first choice, the prospect of V8 power and open roads with tempting twists through this area's scenic Qu'Appelle Valley proving an irre sistible .combination. The big powerplant certainly puts lots of extra zing into Chevrolet's basic Continued on page 2
