The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday March 22, 2006 - 35 Ice season ends with shootout loss to Brampton By Matt Civak SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER The Oakville Ice was unable to cool off the red hot Bram pton Thunder,.which extended its winning streak over the Ice with a 2-0 series sweep in the Central Division semifinals. Saturday's Game 1, which was a physical affair, read 5-1 in favour of Bram pton on the scoreboard but was very competitive. Oakville was able to out-shoot the Thunder 25-23, but had problems getting past the T hunder defence and goalkeeper, Cindy Eadie. Oakville coach Randy Hall said th at his team "had a tough tim e getting clear chances." This game was fur th e r proof th at quantity doesn't necessarily beat quali ty. The Ice didn't go down easy, though. A 40-save per form ance from Oakville's backup goalie, Katie Germain and a late goal by the Ice's Becky Kellar tied the game 2-2 and forced a shootout on Sunday. However, the T hunder was able to win the shootout, preventing Oakville from taking the series any further. Hall, who was obviously displeased with the result, had nothing bad to say about his team 's play in the series. "I'm disappointed th at we're done,, but not in our effort," Hall said. "They cashed in on th eir chances and we didn't. That was the difference in the series." T hough many people question w h eth er the shootout is a reasonable way to determ ine a w inner in a hockey game, Hall has come to term s with the con troversial tiebreaker. v "I t's p art of th e game now," Hall said of the shootout. "It's a way of ending games. The NHL does it and it's gooii foY the fans... you learn to accept it." Jayna Hefford and Vicky Sunohara led the way for the T hunder in the series. Hefford scored four goals for B ram pton (two in each game) and S unohara notched a pair of goals and two assists in the series. Oakville's leading scorer, Carly Haggard, played a large role for the Ice in Game 2 with a goal and an assist. Bram pton will play the Durham Lightning in the Central Division finals starting April 1. The w inner of th at series will go on to the NWHL finals against the w inner of the East Division.
