4 The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday March 22, 2006 - CH set to launch community tree-planting program Conservation Halton (CH) is branching out -- literally. To mark its 50th anniversary, the conserva tion authority is launching a community treeplanting program April 22. "We cannot underestimate the value of trees and forests to the health of people and wildlife," said CH chair Brian Penman. "Halton' s forests not only add beauty to our landscape, but more importantly, our forests are vital to ensuring biodiversity, healthy streams, clean drinking water and clean air." The Trees for Watershed Health Program, which is partly funded by a multi-year Ontario Trillium Foundation grant, is designed to com bine CH' s watershed reforestation efforts with community outreach programs that promote environmental protection and enhancement. The program also seeks to develop commu nity and corporate partnership opportunities for effective land management and to imple ment a volunteer program that benefits water shed health. The launch will take place on Earth Day between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Milton Limestone Quarry, adjacent to. Kelso Conservation Area. "Conservation Halton is aiming to plant sev eral thousand trees at this beautiful site, includ ing native species of conifer and hardwood seedlings and saplings, various shrubs, as well as herbaceous plants," said Hassaan Basit, CH community relations manager. `We are aiming to have 500 volunteers, and the day is being planned so that it appeals to veteran tree planters as well as families and individuals new to the activity. We will have a complimentary barbecue, wagon rides, water education dis plays, a fish release and many more fun activi ties." .V ' . Those interested in taking part should regis ter with CH by April 1. Participants are encour aged to bring their own shovels if possible and dress appropriately for the rain-or-shine event. To register a group or family, call Hassaan Blasit at 905-336-1158 or e-mail hbasit@hrca.on.ca. Milton Limestone Quarry, owned by Barrick Gold Corporation, was in operation from 1958 to 2001. Since then, CH and Barrick Gold have been working together to rehabilitate the quar ry to naturalize the site. Barrick Gold plans to dedicate the 176-acre rehabilitated quarry to CH for public parkland. Since 1960 CH has planted over 2.5 million trees on public and private lands throughout the watershed. The watershed currently has about 25 p.er cent forest cover, with more forests located above the Niagara Escarpment than below and the least amount in the urban areas. CH believes that a 30 per cent forest cover is the minimum target to maintain healthy forest ecosystems for wildlife and people.
