The Oakville Beaver W eekend, Saturday March 25, 2006 - 21 Academic awards help students jump-start their future Alyssa Chote Alyssa Chote graduated from White Oaks Secondary School in 2000. Chote received two awards from the Rotary Club - an Academic Award in 1997, and an Academic Excellence and Community Service Award. "I also received a scholar ship from the Governm ent of Ontario (called an "Aiming for the Top" scholarship) and a Lieutentant Governor's Community Volunteer Award. I have an Honours Bachelor of Arts'degree from the University of Toronto in psychology (I graduated in 2005)." Now, back at University of Toronto, Chote is doing a Master of Health Science degree in SpeechLanguage Pathology. "Right now I'm doing a clinical placement for seven weeks at St.Joseph's Healthcare in Ham ilton. I'm working w ith a speech pathologist doing assess ments and therapy with preschool kids." Chote gained interest in this area while doing volunteer work at Trillium Health Centre in Mississauga. Chote has also worked part-tim e for the past four years at Christian Horizons, which runs group homes for adults with developmental dis abilities. "During high school and university I also worked during the Ana Tomljenovic Ana Maria Tomljenovic was a recipient of the Rotary Club of Oakville West Bursary Award in 2001 from St. Ignatius of Loyola Secondary School. In addition to this award Tomljenovic also received a Ford Scholarship of Canada, an Honours Entrance Scholarship at- McMaster University, the Arts Award in Music for 1999, the Co-op Award for 2000, the Academic Achievement Award for 3rd overall academic standing in O.A.C. and the Oakville, Milton Real Estate Award. Tomljenovic decided to pursue undergradu ate studies at McMaster University in the Honours Biochemistry Co-op program, Molecular Biology specialization, which is a five course of study where in addition to coursework, she completed two eight month co op work terms. During her five years at McMaster, Tomljenovic had the opportunity to become involved with a variety of leadership initiatives. "I tried to be as involved as I could in the cam pus community, becoming a member in the Inter-Residence Council in my first year, fol lowed by taking a job as a residence advisor for two years." Tomljenovic has also been volun teering with the Health & Wellness office as a peer health educator for the past three years. During her first two summers of university Tomljenovic had the honour of working as a student helper in a summer school program for the developmental^ challenged. "These students taught me so .much about the human spirit, and this experience has sum m ers at a not-for-profit cnndren's camp in Muskoka - Camp Mini-Yo-We." The Rotary Club awards were a great encouragem ent to Chote as a high school student. "It wa£ nice to have my efforts appreciated and it was a nice surprise that someone had noticed! "Awards like these really are im portant, and they can motivate and inspire young people to keep up their effort in school and in the community. I'd like to thank the Rotary Club and their sponsors for the interest they have taken in stu dents over the years, it's truly a worthwhile program!" remained as one of the most poignant in my life. I hope to continue my studies to at least the Master's level, perhaps even a PhD, depending on how things progress. Eventually I'd like to work in the pharmaceutical industry, or maybe even teach at the university level.-" Tomljenovic is extremely thankful to have been a recipient of the Academic Award of Excellence. "This award helped me to off-set the extensive costs of my first year of university, par ticularly in helping to pay for my textbooks, It allowed me to focus on my studies so that I did n't have to work during the school year to pay for textbooks."
