Youri I M ton Healthcare < H A L T O N H E A L T H C A R E SERV The Mental Health Program at Halton H Halton Healthcare' s Mental Health Program provides a wide range o f inpatient and outpatient services to adults, children and adolescents. Inpatient programs are offered at. Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and the majority o f the Outpatient Programs have recently relocated to 700 Dorval Drive in the Oakville Corporate Centre. Services will be expanded over time to ensure improved access in North Halton through HHS' s Georgetown and Milton Hospitals and through our relationship with North Halton Mental Health Services which has offices in Milton, Acton and Georgetown. Patients come to the program via two entry points - referral from their fam ily physician - or, if the situation is critical - through the emergency rooms o f HHS' s three hospitals. All fam ily physician referrals are screened by clinical mental health staff and then assigned to one o f the program' s services. Consultation-Liaison (CL) Service This Service provides psychiatric assessm ent and consultative advice for adults, including the elderly, w h o are inpatients o n m edical an d surgical w ards and w h o have psychiatric issues. Outpatient Counselling Services This service provides individual counselling and therapy for adults w hose needs dictate individual treatm ent on a short-term basis. Referrals com e from family physicians, including psychiatrists, and from the other com ponents of the m ental health program. Short-term goal oriented therapy to address symptoms o f anxiety, depression, an d other acute psychiatric illnesses, is the m ain treatm ent approach. The ConsultationLiaison Service endeavours to ensure that the mental health needs of all our inpatients are met. The assessmentfocuses on three key factors and how they inter-relate - biologicalfactors such as the functions of the brain and the body, the psychological factors . such as self-esteem and coping with change, and environmental factors like stress. Treatments might include medication, psychotherapy, or modifying a person' s stressors and supports. The goal of the service is to treat the person with an illness, not just the illness itself. " - Dr. Tom Hastings, HHS Psychiatrist Community Support Team This Team provides case m anagem ent to help people w ith severe and persistent m ental disorders achieve an d m aintain m axim um self-sufficiency an d stability w hile integrating into the community. It also provides a recovery support group for clients and a family education program for their relatives. Community Treatment Order (CTO) Program A Com m unity Treatm ent O rder (CTO) is a legal process w hich provides significant structure and resources to ensure that those w ith severe and persistent m ental illnesses w h o have difficulty com plying w ith outpatient treatm ent can be m aintained in the com m unity and not have to be hospitalized. This involves the establishm ent and m onitoring of a com prehensive com m unity based plan called a Com m unity Treatm ent Order, usually developed by all those involved w ith the patient (family, family physician, psychiatrist, w orkplace, landlord, other com m unity agencies). The program also provides education for physicians an d others about Com m unity Treatm ent O rders an d their appropriate use. Adult Inpatient Service This 22-bed unit provides psychiatric assessm ent and short-term treatm ent for individuals over the age of 18 w h o cannot b e safely or effectively treated on an out patient basis. Included is a four-bed Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit, w hich is designed an d staffed to provide ad d ed care for individuals w ith com plex illnesses an d a secure environm ent for those m ost ill an d m ost likely to harm them selves. Mental Health Day Program This is a short term adult, group-based program for p eo p le w h o require intensive intervention but are w ell enough to live on their ow n in the community. The focus is on learning coping skills, self-reliance and achieving personal grow th through education and cognitive behavioural therapy. The program also includes a com bination of psychiatric treatm ent, crisis m anagem ent, and individual counselling. This short-term, day treatm ent program is often considered as an alternative to hospitalization or a w ay to shorten a patient's hospital stay. Once people understand how their thinking affects their behaviour and consequently their emotions, they can learn to avoid assumptions and misinterpretations which often leads them toward a downward spiral of negative feelings. People need to be heard, as well as validated in a safe, non-stigmatized environment.
