The Oak^iH^ Beaver, Friday Mar'ch 31, 2006 - 33 Oakville Children's Choir presents baroque extravaganza History will echo loud and clear at Evangel Pentecostal Church on April 8, when the Oakville Children's Choir mounts a baroque extrava ganza, with help from Tafelmusik conductor Ivars Taurins, the Oakville Chamber Orchestra and soloists Charlene Pauls and Jennifer Enns. `We're com ing at this piece from all sides," says Taurins. The piece is Antonio Vivaldi' s Gloria, which Vivaldi wrote for the girls in one of Venice's charitable children' s homes. Those 18th century homes were called Ospedali -- and the history of the headline piece and of the other music being sung give this concert its name: Music from the Venetian Ospedali. "The OCC is all about making music relevant to our young musicians," says Glenda Crawford, founder and music director of the Oakville Children's Choir. "One area is exposing our singers and audiences to repertoire from past histori cal periods. The challenge is in making the music from the baroque period interest ing and relevant." Crawford points out that Gloria is "well-known, dra matic and exciting to..sing," and says her choir will have some high-powered help. "I think it' s going to be exciting for the choir to work with the orchestral accompa niment, that they'll have the support of an adult ensem ble," says Tkirins. Besides the Oakville Chamber Orchestra, under Stephane Potvin, the OCC will be joined by soprano Charlene Pauls and mezzosoprano Jennifer Enns. Crawford says the musicians and soloists bring "many benefits that come with musical collaboration." As a choral conductor herself, Crawford is especially excited to have Taurins tak ing a turn with the baton. Taurins has directed Toronto's Tafelmusik Chamber Choir since he founded it 25 years ago. It specializes in music of the 17th and 18th centuries. "Taurins is a conductor of national stature, and it's a privilege to have him share his expertise of the baroque period," Crawford says. "He infuses his rehearsals .with humour, metaphor and delightful antics. The choris ters are thrilled to be work ing under his baton." "Music-making should be joyful," Taurins says, "and not something like meatloaf.... It' s doubly wonderful to work with a group of younger students and to see the musicality that Glenda has obviously brought to the ensemble." The concert is at- 7:30 p.m., at Evangel Pentecostal. Church, 1450 Rebecca St. The senior choir will per form Gloria, and the OCC's other divisions -- from the young cherubs to the teenaged chamber choir -- will sing related music. Tickets cost $18 for adults and $12 for seniors and chil dren, at the door or in advance by calling 905-3377104 or see www.oakvillechildrenschoir.org.
