Obviously, these folks have never had they're hair mussed up while powering down the open road in a Mazda Miata. Most o f us spend our lives connected to cars that we drive out o f pure necessity and practicality. You know, the mom-and-pop convenience-mobiles that can carry lots of people and their baggage. Our vehicles enclose us in a cli mate-controlled, artificial environment that is completely disconnected from our surroundings. And to top it off, many lack the style and appearance that matches our individuali tyNow, if you view this as a bad thing, you probably already own a Miata, or comparable topless mode of senso ry overload. The 2000 version of M azda's cute-as-button roadster is a cure for all that is bland in the automobile world. Cars such as the Miata are one-hundred-p^r-cent dedi cated to the passionate exploration of the open road. Or any road, for that matter. The M iata is guaranteed to return max imum smiles by the gallon, whether you're snailing along a permanently-gridlocked expressway, or soaring and twist ing through the coolest two-lane mountain switchback ever built. Since its inception in 1990, more than 500,000 fortu nate souls have thrilled to the M iata's therapeutic treatment, making it the best-selling roadster in the world. These own ers have been lucky enough to pilot a machine that is visu ally stunning, adept and well-balanced in the ride and han dling department. With just the right amount of power and right sticker price, the Miata has been able to satisfy a diverse group o f buyers who have similar goals. The 2000 M iata is an update of the second-generation model introduced inl998. Then, M azda wisely retained the seductive silhouette of the original, but otherwise complete ly redesigned the car to provide more room, improved the ride and handling and, last but not least, added more power to the mix. The result is a better-proportioned sports car with a more aggressive personality. The Miata will surprise you with its considerable feature content. In this regard, it's like most other cars on the road. Even the base model comes equipped with air conditioning, power windows, anti-draft wind blocker panel, remote trunk lid and fuel door release, glass rear window and an AM/FM radio with CD player and power antenna. Move up to the LS, and- items such as a leather interior, power door locks, front air dam, 15-inch alloys, Bose stereo and a limited-slip differential are included in the package. Keeping things cooking under the hood is a 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine that cranks out 140 horsepow er, seven more that the pre-1998 version. This powerplant can be connected to a five-speed manual, or optional fourspeed automatic transmission. The only exception is the Miata Millennium Edition, a new-for-2000 model that comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission. The Millennium Miata also comes in its own unique colour (M ahogany Mica) and has a threespoke NARDI wood steering wheel, shift knob and hand brake grip. Special white-faced gauges, unique beige leather seats, chrome alloy wheels plus a host of other dressy trim items round out the package. Options that can be added to the Miata include ABS (except base) and a detachable hardtop complete with rear window defogger that can turn the car into a four-seasons sports tourer. The Miata seems the perfect alternative for those who are reluctant, or financially unable to shell out thousands more for a Porsche Boxster, BMW Z3 roadster, Mercedes-Benz SLK, or more genteel rides such as the Chrysler Sebring or Camry Solara convertible. It's important to note that all the alternatives owe their very existence to the popularity of the Miata. And there are more on the way. Toyota will soon join the fight with a brand new 2001 MR2 Spyder that's directly aimed at M iata customers. In the meantime, M azda offers the perfect cure for auto motive boredom.
