W ednesdsay May 17, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER A7 Vigilance needed on what children listen to and watch on TV As a concerned parent of a pre-teen, I am imploring all parents to join forces and take a united stand in protecting our children from the unsolicited porno graphic material bombarding their young, impressionable and extremely vulnerable senses. Not only in T.V. com mercials, music, videos and movie the atres but, more directly, through music on the radio (in particular KISS 92 FM) and music videos on MUCH MUSIC (note: There is also MUCH MORE MUSIC which is very different in con tent). In the Oakville area MUCH MUSIC is aired on Channel 17 currently. Just as a personal aside, I enjoy the Macy Gray tune I Try, by Sony Music Canada. I bought her CD and very quick ly returned it -- what a disappointment. The majority of cuts on it were sexually suggestive and nothing at all along the same vein as I Try. BUYER BEWARE!!! On Mon., May 8th, 2000, I read an article in the National Post about a new "boy band" from Toronto called B4-4. Apparently, they performed recently at the SkyDome at a Girl Guide of Canada sleepover. Following that, they walked into the lobby of Sony Music Canada on Letters to the E ditor Leslie Street in Toronto and upon singing a tune for someone with clout in the lobby, they were signed to a recording contract and were sent home with some songs to learn. I heard one of these songs SONY is promoting on KISS 92 and finally said "I've had enough!"). This song ??? suggests mutual oral sex in the first line. Pornographic videos are off limits at video stores for kids -- why are our children being spoon-fed sex over the air waves? It is time to refocus on what our kids are listening to and watching. It is our responsibility and our right as parents to STOP IT NOW. Watch out for one of many other groups offering up the same sort of lyrical content. In particular, the Eminem song put out by Universal is extremely offensive. Start listening to the stuff they are listening to. Even the dia logue of the D J.s on KISS 92 have pro gressively deteriorated since the station's inception a year or so ago, with more and more innuendo and disparaging com ments to the point of suggesting parental disrespect. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFER ENCE. Send a letter, e-mail, fax, phone in, but voice your opinion. Get a petition going at the office, your church, sports groups, associations. And take a pro active stance in guiding our children into adulthood. When you see or hear offen sive material in advertising, call the T.V. station. Take a moment now and check up on your kids. Show them your concern -- they need parameters and guidelines to be able to make any kind of decision wisely. JUST DO IT.
