Earlier this week, she and her brothers were busy vol unteering at a seniors' cen tre. This busy Oakville stu dent said she happened to spot an ad in The Toronto Star for the Toronto Star/Empire Club 2 Young 2 Vote speech contest. It was open to all high school students across five GTA school boards and Harmgardt, who envisions a career in politics, couldn't resist the topic -- What your local mayor can do for youth. "I immediately thought what a terrific way to have the voice of youth represent ed in such a public forum," said Harmgardt. "Oakville should imple ment a program that would allow free , recreational access for youth up to the age of 21. "Now I'm not just talking about the regular swimming pool, skating rink, and fit ness centre. "It's time for a little inno vative thinking; after all it is the 21st century! Youth all across Canada think their community is boring! So why not offer Oakvillians something new and exciting? A wave pool or a glow in the dark ultimate Frisbee league would be fun. "Or perhaps, an archery facility for budding Robin Hoods or an indoor cycling track for wannabe Lance Armstrongs. "Complex obstacle cours es would surely make youth take up the Survivor chal lenge," wrote Harmgardt. Backing up her call were statistics that stated by the time students graduate they spend more time watching TV than in a classroom, that most youths today have their own TVs, VCRs, DVD players, computers and cell phones. Harmgardt also provided statistics on inactivity, even obesity, among youths. "I do follow local politics, in fact I even went out and delivered over 250 flyers," said Harmgardt of her involvement in the recent municipal election. In addition, drainage improve ments are being considered along Wedgewood Creek, north of Baldwin Drive. The study is being conducted in compliance with Schedule "C" of the Municipal Engineers Association "Municipal Class Environmental Assessment," (June 2000). A key component of the study is public consultation. Three Public Information Centres (PICs) were scheduled to provide interested parties with an opportunity to review and discuss issues related to the project. PIC 1, held in March 2005, presented a summary of existing conditions, the assessment process being followed, and environmental considerations. PIC 2, held in June 2006, provided information concerning the need and justification for improve ments and an assessment of planning alternatives, and received feedback on the study to date. The third PIC will be held on Thursday December 14 as noted above. Those attending the PIC will have an opportunity to meet with the Project Team and review the'proposed preliminary design. A final Environmental Study Report will be available for public review in early 2007.
