"It's full of light heartedness and the joy of living." He and McErlain, a pianist and Oakville native, have been performing concerts together over the past three years. The show is named for and features, music from Tchepoumov' s debut solo CD, which he recorded in 1998 and which has received play on CBC, in the United States, Japan, Russia, Australia and more. Now a music teacher in Oakville who teaches violin, piano and guitar, Tchepournov got into Gypsy music after he moved from Russia to Newfoundland. "I'm a classically trained musician," said Tchepournov, who got his masters in music while living in Russia. "I didn't have this idea to play Gypsy music until I came to Canada. It just came to me sponta neously." While playing at different occasions, such as weddings, receptions, parties and corporate, functions, people kept asking him to play Russian folk and traditional Russian music. "Then I had an idea, maybe I'll release this CD with gypsy flavour - actually peo ple like this kind of music," he said. "People like this flavour and I was sponta neously thinking maybe this will work." Tchepournov's music became very popular, especially when he was writing and performing for dance theatres in Newfoundland. "This type of music has different rhyth mic features and the tempo changes rap idly," he explained. "This is music that has so many unpredictable contrasts, which is the beauty of the music. It's fast, slow, fast slow, it changes in tempo, it changes in mood." That's the biggest characteristic of Gypsy folk music. "It can be sorrowful and immediately become fire dance," said Tchepournov.
