Empty Bowls emulates soup kitchen by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 9 | Friday, October 28, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Andra Carpino distinctly remembers the first time she participated in the annual Empty Bowls fundraiser, which supports families facing homelessness. It was a cold and dark day during the fall, with a long line of people waiting to get inside the venue, much like one would picture homeless individuals doing to get a hot meal from a soup kitchen. "You don't think about homelessness when you live in a town like Oakville that is affluent," said the Oakville resident of the eye-opening experience a decade ago. "It really struck me," she said. "Some people live every day like this." That feeling of being grateful and thankful for what one has in life is what has kept Carpino returning year after year to Empty Bowls, which is marking its 10th anniversary this year. It's a signature fundraising event for Home Suite Hope (HSH), a non-profit charitable organization that provides transitional housing, education and training to single-parent families facing homelessness in the community. This year, the fundraiser is on Sunday, Nov. 6 at Oakville Christian School, 112 Third Line, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and 1:30-3 p.m. Adult tickets cost $50, children's tickets cost $30, a group of two costs $95, a group of four costs $180 and a group of ten costs $375.
