www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, October 28, 2016 | 10 65+ Enjoy Lifestyle Freedom at Glimpsing another side of Oakville continued from p.9 Each will find a new home after Nov. 6 when attendees are encouraged to select a bowl or mug from the decorated variety on display and fill it with gourmet soups made and served by 13 local restaurants. After enjoying the hot meal, they can take their chosen bowl/mug home as a reminder of the hope they have provided to those facing homelessness in Halton. Carpino says she looks forward to attending the event with her family or her friends because it's a unique experience with an underlying message that resonates with her. "There needs to be attention given to the cause," she said. "There are homeless individuals through no fault of their own.... we need to highlight that this problem exists." Noting she recently helped a friend at a community food drive, Carpino, who has also participated in painting the bowls, said she was surprised at how many families needed the basics -- milk, cheese, bread and eggs. "I just find that quite shocking," she said. "These are staples, and not the most expensive items, and yet families need that kind of help." Event co-chair France Theriault-Martin shared the same sentiment, noting she was not really aware there was such a need for a fundraiser like Empty Bowls until she got involved and saw "another side of Oakville." It's what has motivated her return not only as an attendee, but to also help organize the event over the last few years. "For me, it's really important to give back as a person and be involved in my community," she said. "It's very important, it's kind of a reminder that you never know what could happen to any of us," Theriault-Martin continued, noting you could be living in abundance one moment and find yourself in a different situation six months down the road. Gladysse Cristofaro, the other co-chair boasts Empty Bowls is one that brings together the whole community. Not only does she enjoy participating in bowl-painting parties ahead of the event with her 16-year-old daughter, but on the day of the event, she looks forward to sitting at the long communal tables and engaging in conversations with people she would not have otherwise met. It's a time to connect with some new people you haven't met, Christofaro shared. It's also a chance for people to learn of the need that exists in their local community, she added. New to the event this year is a crafters market featuring local Halton artisans. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at www.homesuitehope.org. Last year's event brought out 600 people and raised more than $80,000. You're invited One beautiful rangeof offeatures. features.
