In fact, hearing loss is highly likely to occur as early as age 60 and can negatively affect one's ability to communicate with others. That's why Nicole Clark, Audiologist and owner of The Oakville Hearing Centre recommends every person near 60 years of age, have a hearing test to establish a baseline. "I've treated patients who are coming in for their first hearing test after their hearing has diminished so much that I'm forced to yell when sharing their results," explained Clark. "When I ask why they didn't come in earlier, they respond that they can hear what they want to hear." Unfortunately, they may not realize how much they are missing. Many who experience hearing loss suffer from isolation and eventual withdrawal from social interactions, according to Clark. At family gatherings, for example, they may nod to go along with the group conversation, when in reality they simply are unable to participate because they can't hear. After the age of 60, gradual loss of hearing happens when sensory outer hair cells within the ear break off in different frequencies. The high frequency outer hair cells, which are mainly responsible for hearing consonants, tend to break off first. This results in muffled speech since sufferers are hearing mostly vowels and missing the consonant sounds that give speech its distinction. If one is unsure about having a hearing test, there are a number of symptoms that signal it's time. · It's a strain to hear one voice within a group of people · Continually asking people to repeat themselves · No longer hear the birds chirping or water dripping from a tap There are many solutions available to patients after they've learned of their hearing loss. The Oakville Hearing Centre offers support for this through diagnostic and consultative services for all ages as well as hearing aid fittings and assistance with all hearing aid purchases. Clark established the centre in 2003 after working for an international hearing aid manufacturer. Additionally, she has spoken at training seminars on hearing aid technology across Canada. As a result, she offers patients extensive knowledge on custom hearing solutions. "A hearing aid is like a blank computer," said Clark. "You need to know how to program it properly in order to meet each patient's needs." Thanks to new technology, hearing aids are now more discreet, easier to handle, and better at enhancing speech sounds over background noise. Although a hearing aid may not provide the wearer with a completely "normal" hearing, it should be able to provide considerable benefit in overcoming the effects of hearing loss. The Oakville Hearing Centre offers a range of quality hearing aids to fit any patient's needs and budget, as well as simple and flexible payment options. Referrals are not necessary for a visit.
