Beware `silent killer': Oakville Fire The first week of November (Nov. 1-7) is Carbon Monoxide (CO) Awareness Week and as such, the Oakville Fire Department is encouraging residents to install and maintain CO alarms and inspect all fuel-burning appliances annually. Those who have a fireplace, fuel-burning appliances or an attached garage were specifically singled out in this warning. "Carbon monoxide alarms provide the only warning of dangerous carbon monoxide gases in your home," said Glenn Barwell, public education officer with the Oakville Fire Department, in a press release. "Make sure you have a working carbon monoxide alarm adjacent to all sleeping areas." Carbon monoxide is produced through the incomplete combustion of fuel. Hazardous exposure can occur if a fuelburning appliance in a home is not properly maintained, or an exhaust vent becomes blocked. To stay safe from carbon monoxide, ensure all fuel-burning appliances in a home are inspected annually. Barwell said carbon monoxide is often referred to as the silent killer as it is an invisible, odourless and potentially lethal gas.
