Abbey Park student SHAD's innovator of the year An Oakville high school teen has been awarded the SHAD prize for Innovator of the Year for an idea set to address food insecurity. Abbey Park High School student Mark Bai and a team of 34 high school students from Ontario, British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick came up with Farms2Forks. The concept is an online e-commerce platform that directly connects small-scale farmers and processors to households. It helps people who are food insecure, or looking to eat healthily, order their groceries online, get a 30 per cent discount and have food delivered directly to their door so they can access quality food at affordable prices. "Before SHAD, most of us had no idea the extent of the food security problem in Canada," said Bai's team leader Akash Jain in a media release. "Many families in Canada are struggling to provide nutritious food to their families on a consistent basis, which poses a number of concerns, especially to children who are still developing." SHAD is a Canadian charitable, non-profit organization that annually provides the opportunity for about 700 students from across Canada and internationally to attend a monthlong summer program at one of 13 Canadian host universities focused on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math). The team Bai was a part of formed this past summer at Queen's University, in Kingston, Application of Scientific Principles; Best Video Pitch and Best Application of Theme. Named after one of SHAD's long serving supporters, the Cup showcases the "exceptional talent and innovative ideas of SHAD Fellows who participated in the prestigious enrichment program in 2016," according to the release. As part of the SHAD program, youths are challenged to come up with an original product or service to solve a current economic or social problem. On the cusp of Canada's 150th anniversary, the students from around the country were challenged this summer to come up with new ideas to improve food security, since approximately four million Canadians experience hunger, according to SHAD. The students came up with several novel ideas that can be viewed online at www.shad.ca/ SHADCup2016projects. "It is so impressive to see the kinds of novel ideas top high school students come up with in only a few months when they collaborate at SHAD," Tim Jackson, SHAD president and CEO, said in the release. "Many of the students told me this experience has given them added confidence to go back into their communities and make a difference."
