SEND US YOUR PHOTOS: T uesday's stunning triumph at the polls by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump left many with mixed emotions. Here's what some local officials had to say. e're in Canada and we respect another country's decision when it comes to their voting and we work with whoever is elected in any country so I think we need to be respectful of the decision they made and work with MP Pam Damoff whoever is there. It sort of captured something similar to what we saw in Canada with our election where people were not happy with the current system and wanted a change. Our message was certainly different than the message in the States, but it was certainly a feeling that people wanted a change and that's how they voted. he United States is Ontario's most important trading partner and a great ally so it's something we need to watch closely. At the same time, Ontario's sound economic and social policies, and Canada's for that matter, enables us to be resilient in times of uncertainty and instability. Ontario's goal is to remain prosperous and successful and we will continue to work with our neighbours to the MPP Kevin Flynn south in a co-operative manner while focusing on what's best for Ontarians. The result of the vote obviously surprised a lot of people, and there may be some good lessons for governments and businesses around the world to be found in an analysis of those results. W t makes us appreciate the amount of anger that's out in the United States with the electorate and how fortunate we are in our region. Obviously the big issue was job creation. People felt left beGary Carr, Halton hind and that they're underemployed in United States. The other big factor, I think too, is the criminal justice. It was certainly a very angry election with people really upset with the government. Obviously as good neighbours, we wish them well and of course on top of everything else they are still our largest trading partner so we're hopeful they begin to start to pull together and if they do that and the economy gets better, I think it will just benefit us here in our region. ike the rest of tionships with the U.S. the world we Consulate and the U.S. watched with interEmbassy and we look est the U.S. presidenforward to strengthential campaign and ing these relationships election results. I T L anada as a nation has no closer friend than the United States. We share an undefended border, common cultural ties and have closely integrated economies with extensive cross border trade and investment. Many Oakvillians have family MP John Oliver members who live in the U.S. This important nation-to-nation relationship is highly valued by Canadians and the Government of Canada looks forward to working very closely with President-elect Trump, his administration, and with the United States Congress in the years ahead. As Chair of the Liberal Automotive Caucus I am particularly aware of the importance of cross-border trade and the provisions of NAFTA to the ongoing success of our automotive manufacturing sector. As stated by Prime Minister Trudeau, "The relationship between our two countries serves as a model for the world." On a more personal note as a husband and proud father of a daughter and as a strong champion of our rights and freedoms I trust the divisive campaign rhetoric will be quickly replaced by the celebration of the diversity in our countries and the establishment of equality in opportunity for all. C Mayor Rob Burton ith so much of the opportunity of the 21st century in front of us in Canada, rather than commenting on the U.S. situation, I prefer thinking and working on our own future with our customary creativity, imagination, resilience, and success.
