The Profiles in Diversity Journal, an internationally-recognized publication, recently announced the Halton police service had been selected as one of its 2016 Top 10 International Innovation Award Winners. The service was selected from a global field for its commitment to diversity and inclusion, demonstrated by having officers attend a twoday learning session and an annual one-day symposium on best practices in the area of diversity and inclusion. Regular training modules, built by community partners for officers, accompanied this initiative. Officers also receive career-long training in bias awareness, cultural competency and more. "It is such a tremendous honour for the Halton Regional Police to be recognized by the Profiles of Diversity Journal as one of the top 10 organizations worldwide when it comes to recognizing diversity, cultural sensitivity and awareness," stated Halton Police Chief Stephen Tanner. "We are working cooperatively with our partners through community mobilization so that this is truly an inclusive area." Other Halton police initiatives aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion, include the Police Ethnic and Cultural Education (PEACE) program, which teaches young people about the community and allows police to strengthen relationships with local youth. Police also hold diversity engagement forums in which officers meet with community partners from all areas to learn more about how they can serve the needs of these communities better. When diverse groups feel they are at risk of being victimized by hate crimes, police offer support in the form of crime prevention seminars, security audits and heightened patrols. "Particularly in the U.S., the climate of policecommunity relations has never been more at the forefront than it has been this year. Police leaders have encountered challenges, which test public confidence in policing. In Halton, we have some of the best officers this country has serving our community, from which our reputation is built. We boast low crime rates and safety ratings ahead of any other municipality our size in Canada and public confidence ratings are extremely high," stated Halton Police Deputy Chief Nishan Duraiappah. "Our challenge, here in Halton, is therefore different than our counterparts. We, with key partners, must keep our region ahead of the curve and further galvanize our local environment to keep us apart from the broad complex issues elsewhere.
