Firefighters world champs by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 15 | Friday, November 18, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The next time Oakville residents dial 911 there's a chance the man now recognized as the fastest firefighter on the planet may respond to their call. A team from the Oakville Fire Department competed against the best firefighters the world had to offer at the 2016 World's Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge Championships, which took place in Montgomery, Ala. in late October. Local firefighters walked away with numerous victories and set two new world records. "It's an incredible feat," said Oakville Fire Chief Brian Durdin. "To go down there and compete is one thing. To compete and come first is remarkable. They are remarkable athletes. This is purely a result of their dedication and commitment to the sport.... Everybody here is proud of them." Involving hundreds of competitors from across the U.S., Canada, Slovenia, Germany, Kuwait, New Zealand and beyond, the annual challenge takes its participants to the very limits of their endurance by requiring them to run a complex obstacle course while in full firefighter gear. Overall, the Oakville team got first place with a world record setting team time of 4:04:85. Ian Van Reenen received first place for the individual competition and set a new world record when he completed the obstacle course with a time of 1:15:29. "What is significant about that is he broke the record during his Tuesday run," said Durdin. see Tops on p.17 Oakville firefighters shattered two world records during international competition.
