The pair from White Oaks Secondary School (WOSS) earned one of eight spots for Ontario debate teams at the 2016 Ontario Oxford Cup Qualifier late last month at Havergal College in Toronto and hopes to do well at the upcoming competition. The students were among 52 teams vying for a chance to compete in the prestigious debate tournament that pits teams from across Canada against one another. It had been one of the "biggest wins White Oaks debaters have had in the 32 years I have coached debate," WOSS English teacher and debate coach Hamish Guthrie said last year. Strathdee and Salaheen, both Grade 12 students, told the Oakville Beaver they have some big shoes to fill. "There's a bit of legacy to live up to," explained Strathdee, who joined the high school debate team when he was in Grade 9. "The debaters are really good, so we're hoping we can match up to that." Salaheen, who also joined the debate team when she was in Grade 9 on the recommendation of her older brother Zaid, added she's nervous, but is excited to be among the best teams in Canada competing against one another. Each of them have been practicing giving speeches weekly and are also keeping up to date on current events and what's being talked about in the news. If they place first or second in the Oxford Cup tournament, they will head to England to debate at the national high school debate tournament at Oxford University in 2017. Meanwhile, the WOSS debate team is doing well in competition with Vidit Desai and Omar M'Hiri winning the 2016 University of Western Ontario high school debate tournament, which was held Nov. 11-12. Desai and M'Hiri were among five WOSS teams that made the quarter finals. 3350 FAIRVIEW STREET, BuRlIngTon 905-634-7700 · EmAIl: wbu1@bellnet.ca We bring people & nature together FINAL 10 DAYS-SALE ENDS NOV. 27 MONDAY TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY SATURDAY & SUNDAY CLOSED 10:00 am - 8:00 pm 10:00 am - 6:00 pm TABLEWARE .
