Downtown Oakville is hosting its holiday tree-lighting ceremony from 7-9 p.m. at Towne Square to help kick off the Christmas season. There will be entertainment, caroling, a special visit from Santa, and treats, all culminating with the lighting of the tree at 8:30 p.m. A pop-up market featuring downtown Oakville businesses will be open to event-goers, as well. Organizers remind all those who plan to head down, Lakeshore Road East will be closed from Thomas to Dunn streets from 6-10 p.m., including George Street, which will be shut down from 3-10 p.m. The celebrations continue tomorrow (Saturday) with the annual Oakville Santa Claus Parade, which is set to start see Trio on p.3 St. Luke Elementary School student Ramin Mirza got a ride to school in an Oakville Fire ladder truck Tuesday (Nov. 15). Ramin won the ride in the truck after entering a Fire Department colouring contest during the Fire Prevention Week kickoff Sept. 24. The ride was extra special because it was on Ramin's birthday. The developer, Bronte Green, had proposed the building of 875 residences on a 55-hectare property previously occupied by the Saw-Whet Golf Course at 1401 Bronte Rd. The matter was appealed to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) in October 2014 and now, following a negotiated settlement with the Town, the developer is Allan Elgar poised to build 1,181 residences on that property.
