"Today's announcement is historic news for students, families and all of Halton." Recently, the Province delivered a funding announcement for a signi cant educational facility in Oakville's neighbour to the north. The Province is pledging millions of dollars for the creation of a university-led, post-secondary site in Milton. The Province intends to launch a call for proposals in January 2017 from universities for the creation of the facility, along with a site in the Brampton area as well. Between the two locations, the government plans to spend $180 million. Deb Matthews, minister of advanced education and skills development, said they'll be seeking creative proposals from institutions focused on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. The sites will offer both hands-on and distance learning opportunities. While Wilfrid Laurier University has been working with the Town of Milton for more than eight years to develop plans for a campus in that town, the institution isn't being automatically selected and will have to go through the proposal process. This massive investment in education is a boon for this fast-growing region and it couldn't have come at a better time. The Town's plans of hosting a university campus have been years in the making. They were rst presented more than a decade ago, when elected of cials signed off on the creation of the Milton Education Village. Town CAO Bill Mann touted the announcement as a catalyst that will open many doors for local opportunities in education, economic development, technology and innovation. "It's obviously a great day not only for Milton, but all of Halton Region. We're very pleased," he said. The creation of this new educational facility is more than bricks and mortar -- it's an investment in our children, their future and our tomorrow. The vision -- a 400-acre integrated neighbourhood featuring the Mattamy National Cycling Centre, MEV Innovation Centre, integrated transit hub, student and residential housing, and retail and commercial services -- will soon become reality. This is all taking place as Sheridan College has expanded, boasting its Oakville, Brampton and Mississauga campuses -- and is now working on itself becoming a university. As these realities begin to take shape, investments in Halton infrastructure, roads and transit will be needed. These necessary upgrades will be to the bene t of the entire region -- one that will have the tools and resources to better cultivate young minds in an effort to effect change here and around the world.
