Opioid abuse is happening in communities across Canada, and the emergence of fentanyl, an opioid 100 times more potent than morphine, has heightened the crisis even more so, he told the Oakville Beaver Monday (Nov. 21). Oliver, who is the former president and CEO of Halton Healthcare, rose in the House of Commons Nov. 18 to speak about prescription drug abuse as he presented the Interim Report and Recommendations on the Opioid Crisis in Canada prepared by the federal government's Standing Committee on Health, of which he is a member. The report outlines 38 recommendations, which include altering prescribing Oakville MP John Oliver practices, improving education and providing addiction treatment programs and mental health support. It flagged the need for a national database to track fatal and near fatal overdoses due to opioid use and recommended the government create a national strategy to combat the crisis. "It's a very dangerous situation and a lot of attention is being put onto it right now across Canada to deal with it," he said.
