"It only takes one person to bring the Toys for Tots campaign into your community," said Const. Judy Dugas, regional manager for the Halton police Toys for Tots Campaign. "You can take it into your business, your school, place of worship, sports team and connect with us to run a toy drive... we want to put that challenge out that you have the power to impact and make a difference in the lives of a child and their family." The campaign, which sees gifts provided to those in need at the holidays, is put on in partnership with the Salvation Army (which distributes donations), Canadian Tire, the Mandarin Restaurant and Halton Honda, which donated a vehicle to pick up donations. Residents can drop off new unwrapped toys, gift cards or cash at any Halton police station. Halton Regional Police Service headquarters is at 1151 Bronte Rd., while the Oakville District Police Station is at 95 Oak Walk Dr. For a list of drop-off locations and gift ideas, especially for tweens and teens, visit www. haltonpolice.ca/about/events/ToysforTots.php. "This program allows us to bring so much goodwill in this community. It's all of you that come together... to help those in the community know we're there for them in these difficult times," said Dugas, who noted $345,000 was raised last year. Maj. Mike Hennessy spoke on behalf of the Salvation Army's Oakville and Burlington chapters, noting there would be a kettle at the Oakville Canadian Tire for the first time, as part of the Salvation Army's Kettle Campaign. Salvation Army's Christmas assistance program is benefitted by Toys for Tots, he said. "(It) means 400 families in Oakville, including 600 children, will have a bigger and better Christmas," he said, noting the Burlington Salvation Army supports 1,100 families. "We believe that today (Nov. 18), with this kick off and this partnership with Toys for Tots, we can ensure many people will have a better and greater Christmas experience," Hennessy added. Wrestling legends, humanitarians and honourary Halton police officers Tiger Jeet Singh and son Tiger Ali Singh were also at the launch. The Tiger Jeet Singh Foundation has partnered with Toys for Tots for six years and has run its annual Miracle on Main Street toy drive in partnership with the cause. The eighth rendition of which is set for Monday, Dec. 12 in Milton. For Halton Deputy Chief Nishan Duraiappah, Toys for Tots is "a remarkable thing." "It represents one of the emphases we as a police organization are putting forward and that is bringing together people from all across the community to improve the quality of life that we have in this region," he said at the launch. "The simple act of gift giving has a remarkable impact."
