If you're in the market to purchase a new appliance (clothes washer or dryer, dish washer, range, freezer, refrigerator), it makes sense to figure out how much it will cost you to run it over its lifetime". This is called "the second price tag," and you'll pay it every month for the next decade or two. Energy-efficient models can be well worth a bit m ore m oney up front, w hen you consider the energy savings that y o u 'll realize for m any years. Here's an example: when you purchase a high-efficiency 15 cu. ft. refrigerator-freezer, you'll save $50 a year on your electricity bill. Over its 17-year life time, you'll save $850. Imagine how much we could save if all 12.5 million Ontarians said "yes" to energyefficient appliances. I believe it can happen, Together, let's do it! Look for the ENERGY STAR label. It tells you how much energy the appliance will consume in a year o f normal service. You can compare the energy efficiency o f various models of the same size and class to determine which one is best. Refrigerators are 53 per cent more energy efficient today than they were in 1984. You can save even more energy and money by getting rid o f that old fridge or freezer in the garage or basement. Check w ith your local utility company to see if they operate an appliance recycling program. "The Conservation Zone" is designed to help you find easy w ays to start saving energy and becom e p art o f O n ta rio 's grow ing conservation culture. I hope you find these columns useful!
