Total housing starts rose by nearly two per cent to- 293 homes from the same m onth a year earlier. Single-detached home starts jum ped by over 16 per cent to reach 158 units. "Though mortgage rates have slowly started to rise, they are still low and appear to have had little effect on damp ening home buying activity in April", says Dana Sena£ama, CMHC Market Analyst. "The strong growth in detached homes starts in April is indicative of home buy ing demand from Torontonians looking to escape Toronto' s high house prices," adds Senagama. Housing starts so far this year are at 838 units - 13 per cent above that record ed for the same time period a year earlier. The multiple-family dwelling category is showing strength, with starts up by 35 per cent at 393 units.
