INFECTION CONTROL AT THE DENTAL OFFICE When it comes to infection control, you are in good hands at the dental office where it ia a prim ary concern. It is im portant to know that extensive precautions are taken throughout the day to protect patients and staff. You may not be aware, but many im portant sterilization and infection c ontro l procedures occur out of the p a tie nt's view. For example before you enter an examination room, all surfaces are sanitized and disinfected. Extra precautions are taken to disinfect the water lines w ithin the examination rooms. Some dental chairs are equipped with their own water purification system. The water expressed from the handpieces and air water syringes is distilled, clean water. There are rigorous mandated standards to ensure that dental team members disin fe ct.th e ir hands between each patient as well as fo llo w stric t standards of personal hygiene. Disposable gloves are used during examinations and are changed between each patient. Masks are also worn to protect against airborne contaminants. Many of the material objects that come into contact with the patient during-a dental visit are disposable and are discarded im m ediately after use in special containers. Dental instrum ents are sterilized after each time they are used on a patient. In fact, many dental offices also have a m onthly m o n ito rin g system in place to ensure 100% e ffic ie n cy of th e ir sterilization systems. The bottom line is - your dental health is too im portant to neglect. Don't let uncertainty about your safety keep you form visiting the dentist, or cause you undue anxiety while you are there.
