For 27-year-old Shane M aginnis, this past Sunday marked the opening race of the Ontario Stock Car Association of Asphalt Racers (OSCAAR) sea son at Cayuga Motor Speedway, the first of 12 ovals he hopes to conquer en route to a league championship. A problem with his shocks held Maginnis back to a 10th place finish, after he was running in third. A technician at Kerr Cadillac Pontiac Buick, Maginnis began racing go-carts at age 9 and moved to stock cars 10 years ago at age 17. Racing has been a part of his life since he was a young boy. "My dad has been racing cars for years," he said. "The first year I raced go-carts I won rookie of the year and the league champi onship, so I've always enjoyed it." Maginnis finished fifth in the OSCAAR point standings last year with limited equipment and a mediocre car. This winter, with the help of his father, Terry, and co-workers at Kerr, he stripped Halton high school track and field: senior women and junior men SEN IO R W OM EN 100 METER DASH 1. Robyn McDonald. "I've gotten a lot of helpful advice from people around the dealer ship here and my father has been great helping me set the car up, so my expectations are high." The OSCAAR circuit draws large crowds who love the high speed races. Maginnis' stock car can rival the speed of those dri ven by NASCAR drivers in the U.S. "The cars in our races are great," he said. "Many of them have 700 Horsepower engines and can go as fast as 160 miles per hour. It's quite an adrenaline rush when you're out there, although with 20 other cars going at the same speed it really doesn't feel like you're going that fast." Safety continues to be a grow ing concern in the wake of recent race-related deaths to Greg Moore and Adam Petty. Maginnis believes that the OSCAAR cir cuit has taken the necessary pre cautions to avoid serious acci dents. "Our cars go through a mandatory safety inspection and the races are usually very clean," he said. "There is a respect on the track amongst the drivers." Maginnis has his sights set on larger goals in the coming years. He plans to continue on the OSCAAR circuit in 2001, but wants to add a few races in the northeastern United States to his (See 'Maginnis' page D3) m ,2-mm* -- p,°" , x4'S,» S/" - IV ffim ON INCH VIH1CU. ore-owned cars, ww* trucks ciearanccOTB .... / Weve .e_jllv r al > hi * realize that fte one you ousiinplypaV*ed,ffere ffm e ^ e , owned vehicles^ or truck you choose is less, we u wrra: 7 sE E D E A L E R F 0 Rdew u s 51 1 lit UiYSH You could win this beautiful Napoleon barbecue. ^ lust look fo r your "MALLennium Flyer" in The Spectator or a t your door.
