3 3 |Thursday, November 17, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Impact best analyzed after official merger on Feb. , 1 continued from p.32 any restructuring happening from this," Hierlihy told the Oakville Beaver, following his presentation at the CCS Halton Community Office' s recent volunteer appreciation luncheon. "We're just so pleased that we can join forces. The belief we have is we can be better together." One of the financial benefits will come from moving CBCF staff into CCS' community offices, Hierlihy said, which will also reduce CBCF costs. "More of the savings are likely to come from combining our forces in finance, IT and support services, things like that," said Hierlihy. "We need to get through legalities first and then we will be making much more of the situation Feb. 1, 2017, when everything is completed. We will then be able to actualize the impact." Hierlihy noted CCS has reduced the size of some of its offices in recent months to cut down on rental costs. However, the possibility of a downsize in Halton may be remote - "I don't actually think the Halton office is changing. I would have to check with Sharie (Mulkewich, CCS Central West regional director)." "We've downsized our physical locations quite significantly. Some of the things we've done include reducing our inventories, which reduces our storage onsite," said Hierlihy. "We're really trying to reduce operating expenses more than anything because what we're always committed to is stretching the donor dollars as far as they possibly can." Because changes are made in both organizations, Hierlihy reiterated the focus wouldn't be on restructuring or cutting jobs. The merger' s impacts on community offices will happen in "very positive ways," he said, because the CBCF doesn't have any local branches. This will allow CCS to support CBCF fundraisers, such as Run for the Cure, from its municipal offices because it has a "great community network across the province." "We will be able to help it a great deal in some of its events. But we're not going to take away our community volunteer focus," said Hierlihy. "In some ways, we can learn from it, but (CBCF) is also a volunteer-driven organization. Run for the Cure is a volunteer-driven, staffsupported event." As a result, the Canadian Cancer Society will "leverage" the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation' s expertise and apply it to its own events moving forward, Hierlihy said. This will mean more staff-driven and volunteer-supported CCS fundraisers. "There are so many ways in which we can work together. It (CBCF) will leverage our network, for sure. It' s going to be very good for it in that regard," said Hierlihy. The CCS Ontario executive director expanded 2 0 1 7 : Hierlihy on the groups' initial public statement regarding the merger, noting it will help streamline the donation process for the public. "People sometimes aren't clear on who they're giving to, they're not clear on what the impact is. We are the largest funder of cancer research for charities in the country," said Hierlihy. "So, it' s a bit in response to our supporters to say, `W hy don't you start collaborating and working together?' It' s great to see that." Hierlihy used to work for the CBCF, so having the two organizations together under one banner is "especially close to my heart," he said. "I have always felt charities need to work together on similar causes. That' s really why we're doing it. It' s a good news story," said Hierlihy. The merger still requires appropriate approvals and until more details are released, both organizations will continue to operate as usual.
